Series: Family Life Controlled by the Spirit | Category: Spirit Filled Family Life | Scripture: Ephesians 5:25–5:33 | Tags: Sermons, Disciples, Love, Family

I.  God restores the balance of submission and headship through the command to love.  (Eph. 5:25-31)

     A.  The husband's love must be sacrificial.  (5:25)

     B.  The husband's love must be sanctifying.  (5:26-27)

     C.  The husband's love must be supplying.  (5:28-31)

II.  God lays responsibilities on the head of the home that are not laid on wives.  (Eph. 5:23-24)

     A.  The husband must be under the authority of Christ.  (1 Corinthians 11:3)

     B.  The husband must be the final authority in the decision making process.

     C.  The husband must be encouraging spiritual growth in his family.

          1.  He must grow himself.

          2.  He must establish accountability within the home.

     D.  The husband must have his whole household under control, including his wife.

This is not the control of a tyrant, but rather all Christian households are to be orderly and, by God's grace, controlled by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

     E.  The husband must confront problems within the home.

     F.  The husband must keep the husband/wife relationship fresh.

III.  God desires that the husband's leadership over the wife be a reflection of Christ's leadership over the church.  (Eph. 5:23-32)

     A.  Jesus leads His church through His Word.

     B.  Jesus leads His church through His Holy Spirit.

     C.  Jesus leads His church in love.

          1.  Christ loved us when we were unlovely.  (Romans 5:8)

          2.  Christ chastens us, but always does so in love.  (Hebrews 12:6)

          3.  Christ loves us individually.  (John 10:3)
