Obedient Children

Family Life Controlled by the Spirit

Nov 10, 2013

Series: Family Life Controlled by the Spirit | Category: Spirit Filled Family Life | Scripture: Ephesians 6:1–6:3

Children may develop a form of obedience to their parents even while remaining unsaved, but they will never obey as Paul commands in Ephesians 6:1-3 so long as their sins have not been dealt with.  True obedience to parents, and certainly true obedience to God, will only occur in their lives when they repent of sin and come to a saving faith in Jesus.  The right kind of obedience will only be a reality for them when they are "filled with the Spirit."

I.  Who should obey?  (Eph. 6:1a)

Those children who remain in the home and are not yet adults.  As the children move from childhood to adulthood, they gradually make more and more of their own decisions.  They are never to stop honoring their parents, but at some point the son or daughter is no longer responsible to obey every command or desire of the parents.

II.  The commands to obey.  (Eph. 6:1b-2a)

     A.  Obey your parents.

     B.  Honor your parents.

III.  The reasons to obey.  (Eph. 6:1c; 2b-3)

     A.  Such obedience is essentially right.

     B.  Such obedience carries with it a promise from God.
