The Spirit's Role in Your Attitude Toward Christ

Ignorance of some things in life is certainly not harmful.  However, Paul stresses here that ingornance of the truth about the Holy Spirit and His giving of gifts for service to the members of the church body is harmful.  In this introduction to his broader teaching on the gifts, Paul indicates that ecstatic gifts are not to be abused.  In fact, it is unlikely that there is a real need for them in the gathering of the church for worship.  Too much emphasis on gifts such as speaking in tongues was leading the church into practices that mimiced their pagan practices prior to coming to faith in Christ.  All right use of the gifts of the Spirit are designed to glorify Jesus as Lord through the edification of the church.  Here Paul introduces his answer to their question by considering:

I.  The subject; spiritual gifts.  (1 Cor. 12:1)

II.  The sad past of the Corinthians; spiritual corruption.  (1 Cor. 12:2)

III.  The spoken necesiity; "Jesus is Lord."  (1 Cor. 12:3)
