Psalm 51 gives a biblical commentary on the first half of 1 John 1:9.  Psalm 32 is a biblical commentary on the last half of 1 John 1:9

Outline of Psalm 32:

I.  The reason for man's blessedness.  (Ps. 32:1-2)

     A.  Through confession our rebellion is removed.

          1.  Transgression.  (willful deviation from God's declared righteousness)

          2.  Forgiveness.  (to lift up and carry away)

     B.  Through confession our errant ways are hidden.

          1.  Sin.  (missing the mark of God's holy demands)

          2.  Covered.  (to hide)

     C.  Through confession our depravity is not accessed to us.

          1.  Iniquity.  (the corruption of sinful mankinds' hearts)

          2.  Not imputed.  (not accounted to us)

     D.  Through confession our hypocrisy has ceased.

II.  The roaring pain of guilt.  (Ps. 32:3-4)

     A.  Silence causes guilt to increase.

     B.  Guilt causes suffering.

     C.  God causes guilt to remain on sinners who do not confess.

III.  The reversing character of confession.  (Ps. 32:5-7)

     A.  The act of confession.

     B.  The urgency of confession.

     C.  The personal benefits of confession.

IV.  The restraint of godly teaching.  (Ps. 32:8-10)

V.  The rejoicing of the righteous.  (Ps. 32:11)
