III.  What we should be in Christ.  (1 John 3:3)

     A.  The scope of holy commitments.  (3:3a)

Everyone who has truly trusted in Christ looks for His return and seeks to be pure because Jesus is pure.  A life that claims salvation in Christ that is not being conformed to the image of Christ is a life without Christ!

     B.  The surety of Jesus' return.  (3:3b)

John leaves no doubt concerning whether or not Jesus will return.  Rather, he bases the efforts of the believer toward sanctification on this hope.

     C.  The sanctifying power of Jesus' return.  (3:3c)

All who really know Christ will be purifying themselves.  This does not mean that we will never fall into sin, but we will not have sin rule over us.  We will repent when failure occurs, and we will be more and more conformed to the image of our pure Lord Jesus.

     D.  The standard of holiness to which we are to strive.  (3:3d)

Jesus is perfectly pure, and He is the standard toward which we strive in this life.
