The first six verses of 1 John 4 make up a single section that deals with the discernment that proves one's love for others and that one is truly a follower of the Lord Jesus.
I. You can have assurance that you are right in your assessment of the teaching of others. (1 John 4:2a)
The Spirit of truth is too pure to put forth error and too powerful to allow sinful men to "mess up" what He inspires.
II. True Christianity recognizes both the deity and humanity of the Lord Jesus Christ. (1 John 4:2b)
What is said must be backed up by evidence of a true commitment.
